Glycyrrhiza  Glabra  is a Licorice, most commonly known as Licorice root, Licorice, the sweet root is an adaptogen herb that grows in Europe and parts of Asia. Centuries ago, licorice root was used as a sweetener and for stomach inflammation, upper respiratory problems and dozens of other problems including a remedy for leaky gut.1
The medical community is starting to be more accepting of the overall holistic benefits of Glycyrrhiza licorice extract which is extracted from licorice root. Glycyrrhizin Licorice root is so complex that researchers have isolated 134 different compounds.
The main compounds are:

  • Flavonoids which are responsible for the anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Coumarins and Stilbenoids which are responsible for the antibiotic and anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Glycyrrhizin Glabra which showed anti-hepatitis activities in a few patients. 2

The medicinal strength and benefits of licorice root are prominent enough that the FDA issued a notice for consumers to be aware that black licorice is more than just a sweet treat. Even when the root extract is used just to sweeten, it can’t be ignored as a potent compound. And while the root is the primary portion used for supplements and remedies, the leaves have been evaluated for their antimicrobial benefits.3

At Herbochem, we understand the benefits and limitations of DGL and Licorice root extract and hence offer both grades depending on the customer’s requirements.

The only difference between DGL and licorice root is that DGL is Deglycyrrhizinated. This is a good thing because the glycyrrhizin in “regular” licorice root can cause a few side effects.
